Skills

There is over 300 skills in Unacharted Waters Online. They come in several different categories

1. Personal skills
2. College skills
3. Ship skills
4. Aide skills

Personal skills are the ones your character can get and develop during the game. They are clustered in 3 groups resembling classes: Adventure, Trade and Battle.

College skills are acquired from Oxford and they give you special abilities or boost personal skills. More information on Oxford skills can be found  here .

Aide skills come with your aide - they will either give you skills you cannot learn yourself (if your aide is with you) or they will give +1 boost to personal skills. To learn more about aide skills check here.

Ship skills are the ones that you can put on your ship - like Oxford and aide skills they give you or your ships abilities you cant get with personal skills or regular ship characteristics or they will boost your personal skills. For more information see our Ship skills page

Personal skills

Personal skills is what defines what your character is capable of doing and achieving. How good you are as far as your skills are concerned is defined by skill rank. The higher the rank the stronger your character's skill. Skill can have natural (also referred to as 'base') ranks (without any boosts) between 1 and 16. The following rules apply to natural ranks:

1. Regular skills can have natural rank 1-10

2. Favoured skills can have natural rank 1-15

3. Expert skill (maximum 1 at a time) can have natural rank 1-16

Favoured skills come with job you have. Each job has its own set of favoured skills. Having skill as favoured has several benefits:

1. Natural rank cap increased to 15

2. Acquisition requirements do not apply (you dont need to have levels or other skills to acquire favoured skill - you simply got to guildmaster and buy it from him)

3. Number of points required to increase rank is lower by half

Expert skill is similar to favoured skills however there can only be one at a time. Intermediated and advanced job has one skill you can be expert in. Expert skill has its natural rank cap increased to 16 and gets +1 boost to rank from job itself.

Each skill can be boosted with various items or other skills (from oxford, aide or ship) up to rank 20. Even if more boosts are applied maximum rank will always be 20. Boost acquired from items or other skills can be from +1 to as much as +4 from single item or +1 or +2 from single kill. Boosts can stack which means that by using several items you may get boosts of even +10 to your natural rank.

There are also special consumables that will add +5 to some skills for short period of time (ca 1  minute).

How to acquire personal skill?

Personal skills can be acquired from Guildmasters and special characters (so called important persons) that are scattered around the world in cities. In order to acquire a skill you need to have required levels and sometimes other skills of certain rank. Each skill will cost you some money from as low amount as 500 ducats to as much as 1 000 000 ducats. If your job favours skill (or makes it expert) you dont have to search for important person and requirements rule do not apply. You simply acquire skill from respective Guildmaster.

Number of personal skills your character is limited to maximum 45. This amount can be increased with items that can be be bought from astro shop. Check Skill Training Request and Skill Notes Usage Long Permit.

However maximum of 45 skill slots is not available when you start game. Your character starts game with 12 skill slots at it can get more after reaching certain level tresholds. Table below presents skill slots numbers available after reaching number of total levels. Please note that levels in the table mean total levels ie. sum of all levels your character has regardles from which class those levels come from:

Total level Skill slots Total Level Skill slots Total level Skill slots
0-1 12 24-25 24 100-109 36
2-3 13 26-27 25 110-119 37
4-5 14 28-29 26 120-129 38
6-7 15 30-34 27 130-139 39
8-9 16 35-39 28 140-149 40
10-11 17 40-44 29 150-159 41
12-13 18 45-49 30 160-169 42
14-15 19 50-59 31 170-179 43
16-17 20 60-69 32 180-189 44
18-19 21 70-79 33 190- 45
20-21 22 80-89 34
22-23 23 90-99 35

Skills can be forgotten to free up skill slots. This can be done by talking to Guildmaster or any important person in game. However once forgotten skill loses its ranks. Which means if acquired again it will be rank 1 and will have to be developed from scratch again.

How to improve personal skills?

Developing personal skills also referred to as ranking is similar to raising levels. You need to acquire profficiency points in order to rank up your skill. Profficiency points can be aquired either by using the skill or by simply having it while doing certain relevant activities. For example to increase Casting skill rank you need to cast trade goods and items using recipes, while to increase navigation skill rank you just need to sail.
